To curb the menace of uninsured vehicles plying Nigerian roads as well as to ensure that victims of road mishaps receive adequate compensation, the Nigeria Police Force has begun a nationwide crackdown on defaulting motorists through the implementation of Third Party Motor Insurance policy across the nation beginning from February 1, 2025, as earlier stated by the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun.
The implication is that, motorists without valid third-party insurance should either strive to comply or face the avoidable mighty hand of the law coming against them if arrested
To this effect, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command disclosed its prompt compliance even as It warns its officers not to see it as another opportunity to be used to extort ignorant motorists.
According to the FCT Police Command’s Spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, Third- party motor insurance policy is a win win policy as it ensures that accident victims receive necessary compensation while at the same time reduces the financial burden on vehicle owners.
She warns that non-compliance will attract dire penalties as enforcement is part of efforts to ensure adherence to road safety regulations, and to protect all road users
In like manner, Delta State Police Command also made public its compliance in a press statement arising from its stable.
The statement, endorsed by the command’s spokesperson Bright Edafe, describes the third-party vehicle insurance as a type of coverage that financially protects a vehicle owner where he/she is responsible for damages to another person’s vehicle.
The statement also disclosed that according to Nigeria Insurance Association report, that a decreasing number of vehicles in the state are insured.
It is pertinent to note that, Third party motor insurance is in accordance with Section 68 of the Insurance Act and Sections 1, 2 – 3 of the Motor Vehicle (Third-Party Insurance) Act, which mandates all vehicle owners to obtain a minimum of Third-Party Insurance before operating on Nigerian roads.
