The National Assembly, NASS, through its Committee on Safety Standards and Regulations, has pledged to collaborate with NIMASA in ensuring the realization of the Agency’s mandates particularly in the area of maritime safety. The Chairman of the Committee, Abubakar Sulaiman, said this in Lagos at the new NIMASA headquarter office in Victoria Island, Lagos when he led his members to the NIMASA edifice to flag off its oversight functions.

Sulaiman commended the management of NIMASA for upholding safety standards in the Nigerian maritime sector and enjoined it not to rest on its oars.

We should recall that  NIMASA was established primarily for the administration of Maritime Safety Seafarers Standards and Security, Maritime Labour, Shipping Regulation, Promotion of Commercial Shipping and Cabotage activities. It also ensures Pollution Prevention and Control in the marine environment as well as implements domesticated International Maritime Organization (IMO) and International Labour Organization (ILO) Conventions.

On its part, the House Committee on safety standards and regulations is committed to ensure reasonably favourable, safe and healthy work environment and conditions in workplaces in Nigeria. The Committee also advises government, employers and employees on measures necessary for the control of various occupational hazards and diseases

According to the Committee, its visit to NIMASA is its first step towards realising its mandate of safe workplaces in the country since inception. It’s also notable that while its predecessors began with Port Harcourts, the Abdullahi Sulaiman led Committee is starting with Lagos.

The Committee also commended the edifice, the new NIMASA headquarter complement by a state-of-the-art infrastructure.
