The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Joint Campus Council (JCC), Lagos State chapter, recently paid an assessment visit to the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA). In the course of the visit which entailed a tour of various LASWA facilities, JCC opted to partner LASWA on a broader sensitization on the efficacy of water transportation in Lagos.
As the Lagos Waterway and its operations regulator, LASWA gave the visiting students insights into its operations as its officials conducted the students round its facilities.
The students drawn from Students’ Union Presidents, speakers, and transport departmental heads from various campuses across the state were led by NANS (JCC) Lagos chairman, AbdulQuadri Abdul-Raheem to the visit while LASWA’s General Manager, Oluwadamola Emmanuel, led the agency’s team during the tour.
Abdul-Raheem assured LASWA that students would sustain the sensitization campaign to promote safety practices among boat operators and passengers while advocating an overall improvement of Lagos’ water transport system. He is optimistic that good patronage of waterways for transportation purposes will ease the pressure on road transportation and boost the economy.
He stressed the need for strict adherence to safety protocols like the mandatory use of life jackets and the avoidance of overcrowding, while ensuring that jetties are maintained and in good conditions.
